Antalya is the capital of Türkiye's Antalya province. It is considered Türkiye's "tourism capital." Tourist numbers increase, especially during the summer months. Antalya has developed rapidly since 1980 due to its favorable climate and tourism, making it Türkiye's fifth most populous province.

Archaeological excavations have proven that people lived in Antalya and its surrounding region 40,000 years ago. Since 2000 BC, the region has been ruled by city-states such as the Hittites, Pamphylia, Lycia, and Cilicia, as well as by Persia, Alexander the Great and his successors, Antigonus, Ptolemy, Seleucid, and the Kingdom of Pergamum. Later, the Roman Empire ruled. Antalya was known in ancient times as Pamphylia, and the cities established here enjoyed a golden age, particularly in the 2nd and 3rd centuries. By the 5th century, it had lost its former splendor.
